Bilgi :FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- An uncommonly good cast and some thrillingly staged action sequences distinguish this thriller, which otherwise has all the stamps of a direct-to-video item. Although big-screen success is unlikely, "End Game," which represents one of Oscar winner Cuba Gooding Jr.'s less embarrassing recent efforts, should garner a strong response on video from action fans. The film, numbering Brett Ratner among its executive producers, recently received its world premiere at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival.
Gooding plays Secret Service agent Alex Thomas, who in the film's opening minutes fails to prevent the assassination of the charismatic president (Jack Scalia), whom he personally has protected for eight years. After a quick period of alcoholic self-recrimination, Thomas is drawn into a personal investigation of the shooting by intrepid reporter Kate Crawford (Angie Harmon), much to the displeasure of his boss (James Woods).
With potential witnesses being killed left and right, the pair quickly realize that a conspiracy is afoot, with their principal nemesis a psycho killer played in typically quirky fashion by Peter Greene. Among the other characters who might or might not have had something to do with the crime are the widowed First Lady (Anne Archer) and a shadowy former U.S. general (Burt Reynolds, looking waxy).
The story line, resembling the countless convoluted suspense tales filling airport bookstores throughout the land, is strictly perfunctory. But director and co-screenwriter Andy Cheng enlivens the proceedings with several superb action set pieces, most notably an urban shootout between Gooding (on foot) and a speeding black van, and a lengthy car chase in which the villain sadistically shoots various automotive bystanders.
Gooding, seemingly welcoming the chance to underplay, provides the proper action hero gravitas, while Harmon manages to deliver some charming moments as the heroine. Of the numerous well-known supporting players, the most entertaining moments come from David Selby, as a particularly enthusiastic street person informant.
