Bilgi :Little Red Riding Hood: A classic story, but there's more to every tale than meets the eye. Before you judge a book by its cover, you've got to flip through the pages. For this story, we begin at the end. Furry and feathered cops from the animal world investigate a domestic disturbance at Granny's cottage, involving a girl, a wolf, and an axe. The charges are many: breaking and entering, disturbing the peace, intent to eat, and wielding an axe without a license. Not to mention, this case might be tied to the elusive "Goody Bandit" who has been stealing the recipes of goody shops everywhere.
Review:Little Red Riding Hood gets an extreme makeover in Hookwinked. This computer-animated, revisionist fairytale pumps up the volume with reinvented characters, big action scenes and a rock, pop and hip-hop soundtrack.
Red, the storybook character formerly known as Little Red Riding Hood, is a delivery girl for her granny’s baked goodies. As Red rides her bicycle during delivery runs she longs to see the world beyond the forest. Little does Red know that her leafy home will soon become a hotbed of danger and mystery.
But for the moment, sadness has descended upon the forest. A thief is stealing goodie recipes, forcing the forest creatures to close their sweet shops.
Red gets a message that her Granny’s recipes are next. Unlike the traditionally helpless Little Red Riding Hood, however, Red (voice by Anne Hathaway) is a brave little lady who won’t be robbed without a fight. Think martial arts skills, as in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
Hookwinked unfolds in flashbacks while suave detective Nicky Flippers (David Ogden Stiers) proves he’s the slickest frog in the forest. Flippers arrives at Granny’s cottage just as Police Chief Grizzly (rapper Xzibit) figures he’s wrapped the case of the stolen recipes up. But it takes Flippers’ cool interrogation style to allow the various suspects to really tell their vastly different accounts.
Co-writers and co-directors Cory Edwards, Tony Leech and Todd Edwards cleverly tie stories from Red, the understated Wolf (Patrick Warburton), Granny (Glenn Close) and the German-accented Woodsman (Jim Belushi) together. As is customary for CGI productions, Hookwinked has its pop-culture references, but they’re sprinkled unobtrusively.
Produced by the independent Kanbar Animation Studio, Hookwinked is not nearly as slick as CGI-projects from Pixar and DreamWorks. The movie’s fuzzy, unrealistic animals resemble a child’s stuffed-animal toys. Red has a doll face. Granny looks like a loan from Looney Tunes. The Woodsman looks rubber. And when the Wolf gets dumped, Wiley Coyote-style, in a river, the rushing water doesn’t look all that believable.
Yet all of the above adds to the film’s charm.
Hoodwinked’s frequent action scenes will please the kids, as will its forest full of funny creatures, none funnier than a hyperactive squirrel named Twitchy (Cory Edwards). In kind, this energetic indie upstart of a film puts the fun back into computer animation, a genre that’s ballooned into deadly serious business during the past decade, so much so that the high-stakes pressure is showing in those big-budget projects from Pixar and DreamWorks.
