Bilgi :Walter Goodfellow, the vicar for the small English country parish of Little Wallop, has allowed his marriage to Gloria go stale and he is so detached from his family that he has not taken notice that his 17-year-old daughter Holly is going through a succession of inappropriate relationships with unsuitable boyfriends and his son Petey fears going to school due to being bullied. Out of desperation for affection, Gloria begins to fall for the advances of Lance, the American golf pro that is giving her "private" lessons. The problems upsetting the family start to fade away after Grace Hawkins, the new housekeeper, arrives and starts tending to matters as an older, and rather darkly mysterious version of Mary Poppins.
Review :
The spirit of Ealing is alive and well in this dark little movie from British director Niall Johnson. Adapted from Richard Russo‘s screenplay – which sets the action in the US – "Keeping Mum" is set in the quaint rural English idyll of Little Wallop, whose 57 inhabitants are looked after by well–meaning but rather bumbling vicar Walter Goodfellow (Rowan Atkinson). While he‘s busy tending to his flock, Walter hasn‘t noticed that his own family is coming apart at the seams. His son (Toby Parkes) is being tormented by bullies, his teenage daughter (Tamsin Egerton) is exploring her blossoming libido, and his long–suffering wife (Kristin Scott Thomas) is on the verge of running off with a sleazy golf pro (Patrick Swayze). But when a new housekeeper (Maggie Smith) arrives, her secret past promises to shake things up a bit.
Packed full of top notch UK talent, "Keeping Mum" certainly raises a smile or two, and employs a tasty vein of black humour throughout as Smith starts bumping off villagers – and their pets – left, right and centre like a psychotic Mary Poppins. The cast in general are all decent enough, but the real surprise here is Rowan Atkinson who underplays for possibly the first time in his career, making Walter personable and sympathetic as he tries to juggle his responsibilities to the parish with those of his family.
Johnson keeps things moving at a decent pace and there‘s plenty to enjoy here – Swayze even strips down to a posing pouch for the ladies. Ok, it may not be quite up to the standards of Ealing classics such as "Kind Hearts and Coronets" but "Keeping Mum" is certainly a step in the right direction for British comedy.
