Review:
s Walk the Line fades out, and you find yourself gasping ever wider as each of Johnny Cash's songs come through credited to Joaquin Phoenix, the full impact of the performance that's just been delivered hits. It's not just that Phoenix is good; it's that he's so good that you're left convinced he's miming to the real thing. He's not. Like last year's Ray, Walk the Line will sink or swim on the strength of its lead performance and it's all ready to swim.
That Reese Witherspoon is just not content to let Phoenix take all the credit immediately sets this film apart. Put simply; Phoenix and Witherspoon aren't playing Johnny Cash and June Carter, they actively become them.
Of course, it's a double-edged sword, with such power there's a real danger that the actor will overshadow the performance. The more impressed you are with the pair's respective performances, the harder it is to connect to the film on any kind of real level. Good acting is about inhabiting characters so that audiences don't really realise you're playing and the trouble with taking on the mantle of a real-life character is that the more impressive the performance the more likely it is we'll see straight through it.
But the axis swings in the reverse too; if the performance is bad the film fails. With such a difficult balance to reach the best option is just to go for gold and damn realism. For Phoenix and Witherspoon, this theory works out fine and, if anything, gives them a leg up when it comes to Best Actor and Actress consideration. Few will leave Walk The Line not completely besotted with the effort they put in.
James Mangold's sweeping biopic takes much in and we're given a carefully balanced look at an unquestionably fascinating subject. To his credit, the film clocks in at just over two hours and never feels too long, nor do any particular moments seem to drag. Mangold avoids the ever-real biopic pitfalls but doesn't succumb to any rulebook that'd make the film seem contrived. Like so few biopics, Walk the Line succeeds at being both beautifully paced and wholly involving. It's a respectful and fascinating look at the life of an unquestionably interesting personality.
Walk the Line will have you rushing to buy up Johnny Cash CDs, so be prepared for the compulsion to hit as the credits roll. If there are any left still dismissing Phoenix as River's brother, Walk the Line will be the film to change their minds. |
