Bilgi :Director Li Hong's first feature film is meant to be a horror flick. On paper, many of the pieces were in place: the location, the campus of Zhejiang University with its early 20th Century western architecture, added some history and gothic elements. Sexy and quirky actors, including newcomer Yuan Tian coming off her debut success as a lesbian temptress in Butterfly (2004) and well-respected veteran Hong Kong actor Francis Ng who was nicknamed "psycho" after playing crazy roles to great effect, were also present.
Even the story sounds like horror: beautiful, but spiteful lead dancer for the musical Lola is murdered on opening night. No shortage of beautiful people who deserve to die - the other dancers gleefully relish the opportunity to replace the lead. Suspects abound. The forerunner to replace the lead Tian Yuan (Tian Yuan) is the ex-boyfriend of the murdered dancer, Tian Yuan's stalker in the shadows, and the shady boyfriend of another dancer.
In reality, the film is a barely suspenseful art film. Even horrible stories have made it as horror films, so what went wrong? I blame the pacing which was too slow, often revealing things better left to the viewer's imagination. Cinematography and editing don't put the viewer in the middle of the action. Even dance sequences seem incredibly static. Acting falls short too, as Yuan Tian has barely enough energy to be a dancer, let alone an actress, while Francis "Psycho" Ng seems to blend into the background.
I did like the flashback sequences and the variety of women's roles from janitor to troupe director. A new female Chinese director in a male-dominated industry is welcome; let's hope her next feature is also a welcome sight.
