Bigas Luna preceded 1992's Jamón Jamón with a serving of Spanish sauce that proves more spicy (the BBFC wielded its scissors fairly liberally at the time of the film's release in 1990) but less substantial than the rest of Luna's ripe 'Iberian Trilogy', Golden Balls and The Tit And The Moon. Lavishly-shot erotica with artistic ambitions, it is spoiled by a rather po-faced tone and a clunky gear change half way through.
The story follows the insatiable Lulu (Neri) as she falls in love with horny academic Pablo (Ladoire). At first their life together is a festival of carnal delight. But their sexual exploration grows increasingly extreme, culminating in a blindfold encounter between Lulu and her brother. Lulu leaves to pursue her own and rather awkward passion for gay men, but her nocturnal missions eventually lead to disaster.
It's lovingly filmed by Luna, and gentlemen who relish the shadowy outline of a lacy thigh will find themselves amply rewarded. So too will fans of threesomes, foursomes, sex with transvestites, masturbation and very close shaves.
What The Ages Of Lulu lacks is the camp, kitsch comedy that makes Luna's subsequent films such fun, and Lulu herself isn't deep enough to sustain the film's psychological demands. An artfully conceived and nicely shot piece of late night erotica, but less impressive in the cold light of day.
