Bilgi :Like millions of kids around the world, Santiago harbors the dream of being a professional footballer. However, living in the Barrios section of Los Angeles, he thinks it is only that--a dream. Until, one day an extraordinary turn of events has him trying out for Premiership club Newcastle United.
Goal! was originally to have been directed by Michael Winterbottom, and it's easy to see what might have initially attracted him to the project. Like In This World (2002), it deals with a young man in flight from impoverished circumstances and in search of a better life.
And like 24 Hour Party People (2002), it takes us behind the scenes of a British institution, offering an opportunity to probe the world of professional soccer. In fact, it was the demand for script approval by FIFA (the Federation Internationale de Football Association), in exchange for the use of team names, facilities and player cameos, that led to Winterbottom's departure from the production.
Now directed by his compatriot Danny Cannon (whose credits include I Still Know What You Did Last Summer), Goal! has ended up as a feelgood yarn about a Mexican kid's dream of playing soccer in Britain.
After years as an illegal immigrant in Los Angeles with his family, Santiago Munez (Kuno Becker) is spotted by a talent scout (Stephen Dillane) who convinces Newcastle United's manager (Marcel Iures) to give him a try-out.
Goal! charts his rise through the ranks, his romance with the club's nurse (Anna Friel) and his struggle to maintain his integrity amid the temptations of soccer celebrity. Real-life soccer players appear in cameo roles, lending a degree of surface credibility to proceedings.
The result is engaging enough in its way, but lacks the hard edge and political savvy that Winterbottom might have brought to it. Goal 2 is already in production, following Santiago's involvement in the European Champions League with Real Madrid, and Goal 3 is waiting down the track, due to be shot during the forthcoming World Cup.
