Review: "Invasion" producer Shaun Cassidy said it best in July, when he described our current existence as "living in an aftermath world." Only days before the London bombings had reawakened the uneasiness of post-Sept. 11 living.
His declaration may hold a deeper meaning now. Hurricane Katrina's destruction made us realize how unprepared we are to face any catastrophes, be they created by terrorism or nature.
As much as people have pointed to our aftermath state of mind as an explanation for the resurgence of organized religion in American culture, earlier predictions that divine influence might spill over into television were greatly exaggerated.
"Revelations" came and went. "Book of Daniel" won't materialize until midseason. Instead, last season's buzz belonged to ABC's "Lost" and NBC's January premiere "Medium." As far as popular culture was concerned, they show our quest has been less about gazing inward at the soul than nervously shivering at the dark, groping for frights or signs of existence beyond the one we know.
Superstition and science fiction have supplanted spirituality on the fall TV schedule. As we mentioned yesterday, CBS exchanged its show about a girl talking to God for a young woman talking to the dead with Friday night's "Ghost Whisperer" -- a gentler, dumber "Medium."
In the spirit of "Lost," we'll see illustrations of mattersbeyond our control presented in forms that defy comprehension. Otherworldly forces, to put it more simply, as in CBS's "Threshold" (which has a two-hour premiere Friday), NBC's "Surface" or ABC's "Invasion."
Television viewers can only take so many spirits in need, however; history shows entertainment consumers prefer their ghosts to be less like Casper or Patrick Swayze and more along the lines of the freakiness in "The Grudge." Capitalizing on that, ABC's also resurrecting the horror-anthology-themed "Night Stalker."
Fright fans should expect less of that series than "Supernatural," a road adventure about boys tracking down terrors from American legend, urban and otherwise, premiering tonight at 9 on KTWB/22. "Supernatural" plays like a high-octane B-flick. You could be mildly ashamed at how much you like it.
Executive produced by Eric Kripke, Robert Singer and "The O.C.'s" McG, the series stars "Gilmore Girls" alumnus Jared Padalecki (Rory's ex Dean) as Sam Winchester, one of two brothers hunting evil on America's highways. Padalecki's connection to its lead-in means more than the fact that The WB gave "Supernatural" the same time slot "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" once occupied, which this season is a losing proposition.
More on that in a bit.
The Winchesters are part of a unique family business that involves hand-to-hand combat training and weapons proficiency. Fun as that sounds, Sam left his father and brother behind to pursue his higher education and, with it, normal life. On the eve of heading to law school, older brother Dean (Jensen Ackles) shows up on Sam's doorstep with the news that his father has disappeared, leaving nothing to go on but a phone message.
As they look for dad, Sam and Dean come across the Lady in White. (You may remember her from such memories as a dark bathroom break in fourth grade or a Ouija board experience during a sleepover.) She's the kind of bump in the night broad that the Winchesters were born to hunt, along with Bloody Mary and the guy with the hook.
Beyond the ghoul of the week, the Winchester family mythology looks more interesting: The premiere opens with flashback to the weird conflagration that took Sam and Dean's mother, the event that drives the family's quest.
We can't vouch for future episodes, but if you can get past the shoddy dialogue and shallow acting, "Supernatural" may be the guilty pleasure TV's been sorely missing. They're easily remedied flaws and, if you doubt that, shove in the DVD of "Buffy's" first episode. It's not as good as you remember.
Besides, this is a series one measures in thrills. Between their fondness for AC/DC and muscle cars, we wouldn't be shocked if the "X-Files" faithful gloms on to this with more passion than "Gilmore Girls" junkies.
Except for that murderous time slot. No matter how great it ends up being, "Supernatural" is destined to fight for whatever crumbs are left over from "The Amazing Race" on CBS, "Commander in Chief" on ABC, "House" on Fox and NBC's comedies. The WB is used to fifth place, though, and if you take a look at the competition on UPN, we're guessing that staying out of last place won't be hard.
