Bilgi :General Hammond summons Colonel Jack ONeill out of retirement to embark on a secret rescue mission. ONeill confesses that he disobeyed orders to destroy the Stargate on Planet Abydos, and that scientist Daniel Jackson may still be alive. Arriving on Abydos with his team, ONeill meets up once again with the scientist, who has discovered a giant elaborate cartouche in hieroglyphics. All signs point to the fact that this is a map of many Stargates that exist throughout the galaxy - a development that makes the dream of the SG-1 team to travel throughout the universe in time a reality.


Review : Think about that. That's 5.75 more seasons than the vast, vast majority of sci-fi shows ever get. You could cram every single episode of "The Lone Gunmen,""Brimstone," and "Space Above and Beyond" in six seasons, and still have room for "Farscape." In sci-fi series years, six seasons equals two eternities.

The show has been around for nearly as long as "Star Trek: Voyager," but doesn't have the horde of vocal detractors that show had. It's been around about as long as "Hercules" or "Xena," but doesn't have the horde of vocal worshippers those shows did.

In 6 or so years of any show, you'd think that a show would stick. You'd think that the show would have insinuated itself into the geek continuum, so that someone you know, if not you, was watching it.

Yet, I don't know anyone who watches this show all the time. No one ever writes to comment about a really great episode. No one complains the usual complaints about the show falling off in quality over the years. But they also haven't said it's gotten better. Where are the organized fans, who complain about a cast member leaving, like one did at the beginning of this season? The show's just ... there. It's on. And that's all.

I've seen a fair amount of episodes. But I've never felt the urge to tape it or to be sure to watch it. In my case, it comes on after "Saturday Night Live," and I'm usually still awake and don't turn the TV off. I've never come away feeling like I had seen anything special.

The show doesn't limit itself to the premise of the movie, good guys teleporting to a desert planet with Egyptian-looking bad guys. Instead, now Stargates exist on all kinds of planets, which opens up whole galaxies of bland, paint-by-numbers scripts.

"SG-1." Would it have been so hard to come up with another suffix to differentiate the show from the movie? Like "Stargate: Not With the Man-Girl From Crying Game."

Calling it "SG-1" only opens the door for me to say it stands for "Simply Generic." But that would be mean.

There are funny lines of dialogue. Here's an improvement idea: Have the characters just stand around and say these funny things. Other than that, the dialogue is full of Stargatey jargon. I feel like I need an English-to-Stargate guide whenever someone starts talking about "First Prime of Apophis."

Richard Dean "Not MacGyver" Anderson is good, but he's not good enough to make me care about the rest of the vanilla characters. Gruff boss, smart guy, independent woman, strong dude, insert name here.

I rented on DVD the first few episodes of the show, to see how or if they transitioned from the movie to the series. Even gratuitous nudity didn't stop the hum-drumness of the show, and they took that stuff out when it got to syndication and Sci Fi Channel.

Sci Fi trumpeted the show's renewal only weeks after cancelling Farscape. "You renewed the wrong one!" I hollered at my PC monitor.

I have to give them credit for gusto, though. The first two episodes, "Children of the Gods," were pretty good. The first season's debut set up a recurring story arc. But then the stories plummeted like the ratings of every other sci-fi show that's ever been on. Immediately after the intro 2-parter, the heroes met an alien culture that had a weird custom. What seems like a thousand similar episodes followed. "Stargate SG-1" is gray, dull, and generic, but at least they're aggressive about it.

Then there's Teal'C, the irritating and goofily named strong dude I have dubbed "Diet Worf." He's from a warrior race, and he carries a mind-controlling alien in his torso.

See, Earth customs are strange to him. Like when someone asks him to "keep an eye on" something. Teal'C says "I will keep BOTH of my eyes on it."

It's been SIX YEARS. Is it fair to the Stargate team that he expects them to get used to him carrying an evil alien in his tummy, but he won't learn what a figure of speech is?
