One night, a field study takes place and Leo accidentally stumbles into one spot too many in a known group of stars. The new comet is soon named Wolf-Biederman. Unfortunately, it races towards earth on a direct collision course. In the meantime Jenny Learner, a NBC reporter, traces the story of a ministers sex-scandal only to learn that "Ellie" is not exactly the name of a hot lady, but more of a pretty hot event. Soon, the comets existance is announced officially. The only chance of saving earth lies in blasting it off its course...As a comet is on a collision course with earth, humans have to prepare for their survival. They randomly select eight hundred thousand people to be saved in order to keep the human race alive.A comet is on a course to collide with Earth, and people must cope with the fact that they will die. The President (Morgan Freeman) has devised a plan to keep as many humans alive as possible. Scientists have built giant caves big enough to hold a million people, and the government is going to have a lottery to pick 800,000 people to live in the caves along with 200,000 scientists, artists and doctors.A mile-wide asteroid is on the verge of colliding with Earth in a matter of days. But we are prepared. Think again. Scientist have begun to build several caves beneath the earth in order to prevent the extinction of the human race. At random, 800,000 people as well as 200,000 scientists and doctors are selected to stay in the caves in order to survive the "Deep Impact."Two Teeenage Astronomers discover an object amongst the stars at night. Little do they know that its a comet on a direct collision course for earth. After an adult astronomer also discovers the comet elsewhere, and dies in a car crash after identifying it correctly as what it is, the President announces the comets existance. He also states that there is no need to panic, because NASA is going to send astronauts on the space mission Messiah. Their mission is to destroy the comet before it gets too close to the earth. When Messian backfires, the President announces that special caves will have to be built, and the government will have to have a lottery-of-fate to randomly select 800,000 ordinary American citizens to go along with 200,000 scientists, soldiers, and other officials. These 1,000,000 people will be set aside to save the population from extinction when the comet hits.An amateur astronomer discovers something in the sky that it is not known. So hie teacher decides to send a photo of it to their consultant, who is distressed after seeing and in his rush to tell someone about it is killed. A year later a reporter who is investigating why one of the Presidents staff resigns abruptly. At first it was rumored that he was an affair when she goes to see him, he tells thats not it and wont fully ellaborate why he resigned. Later the President brings the reporter to him and upon learning what she knows decides to hold a press conference and will let her have first crack at it. At the press conference the President talks about two astronomers, the one who died and the young who discovered it, and that they discovered something, a comet. Now what is so unusual about this comet is that it is the size of New York and if it strikes it the planet it will render it virtually unliveable. So they along with a other countries have been building a space craft that will bring a crew who will try and stop it. Now the reporter asks if his man who resigned because he doesnt believe this plan will work. The President says that they no choice but to try. And the young man who discovered the comet is hailed as a national hero. The crew who is going to stop the comet makes the most of their time with their love ones before they leave. And the reporter who has gained the notoriety that she hoped for, has to deal with a few personal issues. And the President can only hope that the crew can stop the comet.
