Bilgi :Hitch a ride with The Taxi Driver, yet another long-awaited release from the Shaw Brothers film library! Although the title immediately conjures up images of a mohawked Robert De Niro and a young Jodie Foster from Martin Scorsese's 1976 American film classic, a year prior to that movie's release came this similarly titled, yet decidedly different Hong Kong film from veteran director Pao Hsueh Li! Shaw Brothers screen legend David Chiang Da Wei (The Water Margin; Have Sword, Will Travel) headlines the film as the affable Chen Kuang, a local taxi driver whose various travels through the hustle and bustle of the city's streets expose a Hong Kong full of charm, kindness, and even grand adventure! Although not as well known as its Oscar nominated American counterpart, this considerably lighter film definitely stands out on its own, earning much praise from critics for its intelligent script, stylish cinematography, and sharp direction. And with a film resume that includes such Shaw Brothers classics as Boxer from Shantung, Finger of Doom, and Iron Bodyguard, it's no wonder that director Pao Hsueh Li would serve up yet another local treasure with The Taxi Driver, an often hilarious, yet socially-conscious comedy/drama that makes great use of its Hong Kong setting in weaving its tale of one heroic cabbie! Featuring appearances by Wang Chung (Blooded Treasury Fight) and Lin Chen Chi (The Spiritual Boxer) and sporting some excellent fight choreography by famed action director Lau Kar Wing (Master of the Flying Guillotine), The Taxi Driver is one film worth the fare!
