| Bilgi :Broken Lizard, the comedy troupe whose previous big-screen misadventures include Club Dread and Super Troopers, is back for more frat-boy buffoonery. Beerfest, a festival of alcohol- and testosterone-fueled rivalry, is all about being stupid.
After the death of their German immigrant granddaddy, Colorado brothers Todd (Erik Stolhanske) and Jan Wolfhouse (Paul Soter) inherit his Bavarian-style restaurant. But before the boys can continue the business of slinging beer and sausage while an oom-pah band plays the quaint music of their grandpa’s homeland, their great-grandma (Cloris Leachman) tells them they must travel to Oktoberfest in Munich to scatter the family patriarch’s ashes. It’s tradition.
The brothers create havoc at Oktoberfest. Slapstick runs through Beerfest, so much so you’d think Jan and Todd were direct descendents of the Three Stooges. Yet the Jan and Todd Oktoberfest mishaps go where no Stooges shorts have gone before, far enough to earn Beerfest an R rating. Language and substance abuse, especially beer abuse, also win Beerfest its restricted label.
Turns out Munich’s huge mainstream Oktoberfest is for sissy men and tourists. The real event is a secret annual contest called Beerfest. In an undisclosed location, international teams compete in beer games to end all beer games. It’s here that Jan and Todd meet their spiteful German cousins and learn of their own possibly shady heritage. Humiliated by the Germans at Beerfest, the shamed Jan and Todd return to America. They vow to assemble a great beer games team, go to Germany next year and defeat their evil Teutonic cousins at the Munich games.
Jan and Todd recruit Barry Badrinath (Jay Chandrasekhar), a great beer gamesman who’s become a prostitute since they last saw him; Landfill (Kevin Heffernan), a big guy who resembles Curly Howard of the Three Stooges; and Charlie Finklestein (Steve Lemme), a Jewish scientist who likes the idea of beating Germans.
Practicing speed and endurance, the team prepares for the games by drinking excessively and playing bar games such as coin tossing and darts. All of which sets the stage for barrels of drunk, stupid, gross-out comedy, belching included.
And so Beerfest is what it is-- well-staged silliness that entertains at its own lowbrow comedy level. Shakespeare, it ain’t. |
